Ask a Question

This is a new section to give people the opportunity to ask a live question to the ride from the comfort of your own home. All questions will be answered within a week via satellite phone and of course all will be moderated first before publishing. Perhaps you’d like to know about education in China or about life in the saddle. So go ahead, ask me a question.

Question Icon Greetings. I’m a camel trek operator in Texas and would be interested in corresponding with any native camel folks you could put me in touch with, please. My main interest is in saddlery for the Bactrian camels you used in your expedition.

Thanks,

Doug

Answer Icon Hi Doug,
The camels were bought from local Krygyz people around Karakul Lake in NW China. Saddles are made in Kashgar and cost around 40 RMB each. A good one can cost up to a 100 RMB. Mostly camel saddles are stuffed with molted camel hair and sown into canvas sacks and then strung between two poles on either side of the humps. Though my camels have already eaten one saddle, they’re generally pretty hardy and easy to maintain. I’ll certainly send you an email with the telephone numbers of a few camel drivers around that way.
Cheers, Stephen
